Today was another awesome day at the rescue center I volunteer at! 3 kittens and 1 dog were adopted which is always a celebration. I also had lunch with the lovely Madonna who stole a piece of my chicken and was quite proud of herself. I have include a picture of the little conniver herself!
One of the best feelings of success I receive from the kitties and pups is when I can gain the trust of an animal. My patience comes in handy as I wait for them to accept me. Just holding out my hand and letting them come to me can take some time, but when I get a 'head butt' to my hand, or eye contact and one step forward from them oh the joy I get! I have also found that treats work even with the cats. Temptations cat treats seem to be the favorite with all, regardless of the flavor. Some will even eat right from my hand, others I have to leave the treat for them and when I come back and see the treat is gone I consider that a victory as well.
I feel the same when I gain the trust of a new pet sitting client. As a dog accepts me into their home on that first visit; to when they actually engage in play with me is very rewarding. I love my career choice and love all the creatures I am blessed to work with!
